Sunday 21st April 2024 – 11:15

God has been worshipped in this place through the prayers and praises of countless generations. Worship lies at the heart of our life as Christians and we express our theology and belief through our liturgy. It is through these liturgical patterns of words and actions that we are formed and transformed.

Should you wish to translate this order of service into another language, please choose your language in the bottom right. There is a guest wireless network available within the Cathedral for those without a mobile data connection.

Please note that this service may be live streamed for our online congregation. By participating in this service, you acknowledge that you may be visible or audible. If you are uncomfortable about this possibility, please speak to a steward or verger, who will be able to advise further.

The ministry of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is made possible entirely through the support of individuals like you. The donations which we receive from people all over the world support our worship and music tradition, education programmes, and community outreach work, as well as contributing towards the vast cost of maintaining this historic building. Hymn

1. O Praise the Lord, ye servants of the Lord,
Into his courts your joyful homage bring,
Ye that within his holy temple stand
Lift up your hands, lift up your voice and sing:
So shall ye have the blessing from your King.

2. He that hath made all heaven and all the worlds,
Shall from that Sion where his saints adore
Look down with favour, sanctify his Church,
Bless them that tread his sanctuary floor,
And keep them in his ways for evermore.

3. All glory now to God the Father’s name;
Son everlasting, glory unto thee;
And, Holy Spirit, glory thine the same;
One God eternal, blessed Trinity,
As ever was, and evermore shall be.

The Confession

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought and word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may walk in newness of life to the glory of your name.  Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: Raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

1 John 3: 16–24
We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?

Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.

And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

At the end of the reading

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Gradual

This sanctuary of my soul unwitting I keep white and whole, unlatched and lit, if thou shouldest care to enter or tarry there. With parted lips and outstretched hands and listening ears, thy servant stands. Call thou early, call thou late, to thy great service dedicate. My soul, keep white, and whole.

The Minister and Choir sing

The Lord be with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ according to Saint X, in the Y chapter, beginning at the Z verse.

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

John 10: 11–18
‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Offertory Hymn

During this hymn, a collection of money is made. Should you wish to donate online, please tap the button below to give securely by card.

1. Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour,
First-begotten from the dead,
Thou alone, our strong defender,
Liftest up thy people’s head.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Jesu, true and living Bread!

2. Here our humblest homage pay we;
Here in loving rev’rence bow;
Here for Faith’s discernment pray we,
Lest we fail to know thee now.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Thou art here, we ask not how.

3. Paschal Lamb, thine Offering, finished
Once for all when thou wast slain,
In its fullness undiminished
Shall for evermore remain,
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Cleansing souls from every stain.

4. Life-imparting, heavenly Manna,
Stricken Rock with streaming side,
Heaven and earth with loud hosanna,
Worship thee, the Lamb who died,
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Risen, ascended, glorified!

Sanctus & Benedictus

Please remain standing as the Eucharistic Prayer continues, concluding

Please kneel or be seated for

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father,  who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Celebrant breaks the bread and says

The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The Celebrant invites the people to receive communion.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland, a member Church of the Anglican (Episcopalian) Communion. We welcome members of all Christian Church denominations to receive Holy Communion here. Please follow the stewards’ directions.

Whilst the people receive communion, the Choir sings

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

(Lamb of God who takes away  the sins of the world, have mercy on us.)

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

(Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, give us peace.)

The Motet

Ave verum corpus natum de Maria virgine, verum passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cuius latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine. Esto nobis prægustatum mortis in examine. O Iesu dulcis! O Iesu pie! O Iesu, Fili Mariæ.

(Hail, O true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who in anguish to redeem us suffered on the cross; from whose side, when pierced by the spear, there flowed water and blood. O sweet and holy One, O Jesus, Son of Mary.)

Colin Mawby (1936–2019)

When all have received, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

A seasonal post-communion prayer is said, followed by

Almighty God,  we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Please stand to sing the

Hymn

1. O praise our great and glorious Lord,
    And call upon his name,
    To strains of joy tune every chord,
    His mighty acts proclaim:
    Tell how he freed his chosen race
    From Pharaoh’s heavy hand,
    And led them by his sovereign grace
    To seek the promised land.

2. He gave the shadowing cloud by day,
    The moving fire by night,
    To guide his people on their way,
    And make their darkness light.
    To us, the light of Christ our Lord
    Illumines all our ways;
    He leads us by his gospel word,
    And turns our sighs to praise.

3. We too have manna from on high,
    The bread that came from heaven,
    And he who brought salvation nigh
    Has living water given:
    A rock is ours, from whence the spring
    In rich abundance flows,
    And Christ that rock, our priest and king,
    Both life and health bestows.

4. Come, let us prize this heavenly food,
    And trust our heavenly guide,
    So shall we find death’s fearful flood
    Serene as Jordan’s tide.
    So safely reach th’eternal shore
    No more by ills opprest;
    Where saints their Lord and God adore
    And in his glory, rest.
